THE STORY
Polo is power disciplined by grace and directed by passion.
POWER, GRACE & PASSION is a large-scale original painting inspired by the extraordinary partnership between horse and rider. Through movement, composition and a restrained palette, the work seeks to capture not only the excitement of polo, but the disciplined beauty behind it.
For many years I have been drawn to polo—the combination of athleticism, precision and the extraordinary partnership between horse and rider. When the Tinicum Park Polo Club was located near our home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, my family often spent afternoons watching matches along the Delaware River. Watching these matches, I was struck by three qualities: POWER, GRACE & PASSION.
POWER: the physical force and energy of horse and rider.
GRACE: the controlled, intentional movement.
PASSION: the focus and intensity of the competition.
THE INSPIRATION
At times, the players rode their horses quite close to us chasing and hitting the ball. We clearly saw them up close, bigger than life, especially to our young children. We heard the hoofs pounding the ground and at times felt them move past us. We sensed the POWER!
But it wasn’t brute power, it was controlled, channeled, directed—a very deliberate force propelled by the players moving their horses to the ball to engage it with their mallets. Their fluid, intentional motion demonstrated GRACE!
The players and horses seemed to be one, united in a single purpose, fully focused on the polo ball and driving it between the goal posts to score. The intensity, physicality and swift, rapidly changing motion was like a choreographed equestrian dance, all demonstrating PASSION!
THE PAINTING
POWER, GRACE & PASSION seeks to capture these attributes we witnessed at each match. The players and horses were ones we watched many years after Tinicum Park at the Greenwich Polo Club, Greenwich, CT.
I intentionally painted it on a large 4’ x 6’ canvas, to accentuate the movement, focus and intensity of play, drawing the viewer in to participate in the action. I chose to isolate these three players and their horses rather than clutter the image with more figures. These three players are fully focused on the polo ball, which is not in the image. The polo ball is intentionally absent from the composition, positioned just beyond the canvas to the viewer's right. Although the striking of the ball with the mallets is central to the action of the match, I intentionally chose not to fully reveal them within the composition. The gaze of the players is on the ball, they are driving their horses in a coordinated movement in that direction. My hope is that the painting invites the viewer to experience the POWER, GRACE & PASSION of the polo match’s motion.
COMPOSITION & TECHNIQUE
The composition uses a strong diagonal line from the bottom left to the upper right of the canvas. The parallel whips of the middle and right riders forms an opposing diagonal line to create tension, forming a subtle X in the composition. I used a limited palette of Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Ram Umber, Yellow Ochre, Naples Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Hue, Titanium White and Ivory Black.
Besides murals, POWER, GRACE & PASSION is the largest of my numerous large scale paintings.
